The apricot is thought to have originated from the mountainous regions of Central Asia and not Armenia as its botanical name seems to indicate. It is however in this region that the tree became widespread after being brought here by caravans on the silk route. Introduced to France in the 15th century, it then appeared at Versailles thanks to La Quintinie, a French agronomist and gardener. Its small, round and velvety fruit, the apricot, is made into delicious jams and other sweets. An oil is extracted from the kernel of the apricot.
